Brian Heidel has worked on international disaster responses and development programs for more than 37 years. From 2009-2025, he worked as a Team Lead and Advisor with USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, leading numerous major disaster responses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Europe, including the Ebola outbreak in Liberia in 2014. He also supported a wide range of global disaster preparedness initiatives. From 1988-2006, he filled country leadership roles in Asia with Save the Children, Catholic Relief Services and the American Refugee Committee, focused on health, water/sanitation, education, and many other sectors. During that time, he worked with Cambodian refugees on the Thai-Cambodian border from 1988-1989 and served as the Country Director of the American Refugee Committee program in Cambodia from 1992-1996 supporting Cambodian NGOs and community initiatives, and in 1994, co-founded the Cambodian Health Committee. Brian, who is fluent in Thai, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand from 1986-88. He received his undergraduate degree in journalism from Drake University (1984) and received a master’s degree in international development studies with a focus on Southeast Asia from the University of Wisconsin at Madison (1992).
