Dr. Mehret Befekadu serves as the Chief Clinical Coordinator of the Global Health Committee (GHC)’s Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) Program in Ethiopia since May 2023. Dr. Mehret leads the clinical team across multiple hospitals in Ethiopia where GHC works from her base at St. Peter’s Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa. She is a senior physician and internal medicine specialist with a passion to combat one of the nation’s toughest health challenges. Dr. Befekadu received her M.D. degree from Hayat Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2012 and performed her internship at St. Paul Millenium Medical College and her residency in internal medicine at Adama and Black Lion Hospitals between January 2018-February 2021. Most recently, she was an instructor at Yirgalem Hospital Medical College from March 2021-May 2023, a General practitioner at Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College from (February 2016-December 2018), and was the Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis Focal Person at Yirgalem Hospital, in Sidama, Ethiopia from December 2012-January 2016. Her work has been devoted to shaping the next generation of Ethiopian physicians, with a particular focus on MDR-TB as well as clinical service in general. Her journey reflects a commitment to patient care, medical education, and leadership, all fueled by an unwavering commitment to improving lives and global health in Ethiopia and beyond.
